Decorating when kids are around
To save your sanity and have a house you can live with, a little attention to child-friendly decorating will go a long way. When children are just toddlers, move breakables up out of reach for peace of mind. You may want to reserve some areas of the home for adult usage; in this case block them off with gates or locked doors. Children love to be near their parents, so childproof your most-used rooms.
Keep the children's things on low shelves where they can reach them, but while they are going through that awful stage of throwing everything off shelves, you may need to restrict the amount of any kind of goods on low shelves.
If you are painting, satin or semi-gloss paint is the easiest to wash. Keep curtains up off the floor and stay away from anything - e.g. blinds or lamps - with dangling cords. Washable fabrics for upholstery are essential for peace of mind when you have children. Even throwing a bed sheet over your sofa will protect it from grubby hands and feet. Patterns are better than plains as they hide the odd stain more easily.
Glass-topped tables and anything with sharp edges or corners needs to be avoided. Toddlers fall over all the time and they are bound to fall against a sharp corner if one is within reach. Good lighting is also essential to protect young eyesight.
