Before the pop up toaster

The two most used appliances in most kitchens are the toaster and the electric kettle or jug. What did people do before pop-up toasters - apart from spearing a piece of bread with the toasting fork and holding it over hot coals? Well, there was the old slide and turn toaster where you had to open the door right up so that the slice of bread would turn over. Now toasters come in all shapes and sizes. They have wide slots so the crumpets don't get stuck They have an extra 'pop' for extricating short slices and some even toast a smiley face onto the bread.

Kettles come in all sizes, shapes and colours too. Electric kettles of yore had elements in them that could be replaced when they wore out. These days, if a kettle goes bung you toss it in the garbage. Cordless kettles are the best, but you need to get one with a center plug-in for longevity. Like most appliances you get what you pay for, with the cheaper ones likely to spit the dummy after a few months and leave you boiling your water in a saucepan on the stove until you can get to the store.
