The Google Sandbox

Categories
Sales/Marketing The Google Sandbox

The Google Sandbox. What's that all about? What is it? If you're new to all this jargon then read on and discover just what this is all about. Some say it's only a theory and in reality it doesn't actually exist. Here I will do my best to give the facts as I see them and ultimately you can then make your own mind up as to whether you believe the Google sandbox effect is a theory or a myth.

Ok let's start with a basic definition of this phrase. This is the situation when a new website business, or a website frequently changing ownership is put into a temporary state of holding, that is, the actual sandbox, until it is thought to be fit for ranking by Google itself. Some who advocate this theory say that a website can be in this holding state for up to a year or so while those who are against the theory say that this is simply down to the time it takes for Google to calculate the Page rank for the website in question or that it is simply an algorithmic effect.

Some also believe that this sandbox effect is a measure taken by Google themselves to stop websites abusing search engine optimisation, known as SEO methods, then getting barred by Google only to repeat the process under a new website name.

The Google Sandbox. A reality or a theory? Well, if you research the internet itself for answers you will find excellent arguments both for and against the idea as most information you read will actually make sense for both sides of the fence.

For example if it is the case that Google puts new or re-named websites into a waiting period causing a delay for the actual website to be page ranked then this action would give credibility to the search engine itself. In other words, Google doesn't just give any Tom, Dick or Harry a quick and easy page ranking, no, they have to work at it and prove themselves fit to be ranked in the first place. And of course the contrary would be true that if Google accepted those new sites automatically and quickly within days or weeks then surely it would lose credibility and whatever website you have, don't worry 'cos it'll get page ranked immediately anyway, regardless of what work you have or haven't done for it.

Hopefully you can see that both arguments are fair and possible and that nobody, it seems has come forward as yet proclaiming that they have the absolute proof either way.

If you were to carry out your own research on this topic you also would find a mixed bag of opinion and very often quite strong frustration along with it. After all, we're talking about a business here and the need to make money online to survive particularly if your website is your sole income.

Some people working from home on the internet have reported waiting up to one year for their website to start performing while others say they have waited a mere two to three months and so the waiting period can actually vary though while waiting, there is of course no money being made. Interestingly some say there is a way of avoiding this so called sandbox effect and it always comes down to the same, common sense principle. Build up a slow but steady stream of links in a sensible fashion as opposed to blatant self promotion. That however, is a topic in itself and really deserves a completely seperate article.

All types of new sites can be placed in the Google sandbox, the problem appears to occur far more frequently for new websites looking for rankings for the more competitive keywords. So obviously keywords that are in high demand are probably in for a much longer stay in the sandbox simply due to massive competition for the specific keyword.

On the other hand, websites using non competitive keywords may not even be put into this sandbox simply because there is no point as there is no competition.

You won't find conclusive evidence either way to this idea though I have to say as with so many others that there is certainly something which seems to keep a new or re-named website out of the mainstream for some period of time. I don't know exactly what that force is and I don't know if it is Google or some kind of in built computer algorithm. The fact remains that yes, for most websites they don't see the light of day for quite some time, several months in fact.
