Inspiration for Designing Attractive For Entertaining Friends and Family

Categories

A lot of people look forward to the long days and warmer temperatures summer brings so they can spend time in their gardens. Gardens are perfect for providing multifunctional spaces, whether you enjoy entertaining friends and family or just chilling and relaxing after busy days at work. No matter what size outdoor area you have, well designed gardens can create features to enhance the exterior of your property and meet your needs.

Two main sorts of landscaping techniques can be used to create features in your garden - soft landscaping and hard landscaping. Rockeries, paved patio areas and gravel gardens are classed as hard landscaping options whereas incorporating landscaped lawns and turfed areas with borders and plants are encompassed in the term 'soft landscaping'. Whatever features you like or think would look good in your garden, a gardening company with experience can help you by designing a garden layout to suit your preferences and utilise available space.

Incorporating different materials and textures into a garden can give individual looks to any garden, however big or small. The choice in features you should consider for your new garden design include solid features such as wood, metal and stone, water features and colourful planting.

Water features can be constructed from many types of materials and are available in a range of sizes. Even homes with a small yard or flats with a balcony can enjoy a water feature. If you want to incorporate additional features in a self contained water feature, it can enhance the original design, but some come with built in extras like including lights for extra enjoyment in the evening or using plants to soften edges and provide a 'greener' look. If you fancy something different however, a bespoke water feature may be more up your street. More imposing, larger features can include pools with fountains or statues as centre points whilst streams of running water travelling through different sections of a garden can be created to complement different levels of your garden, and provide impact.

Another option you could consider is paving which can transform an old looking garden. A range of colours of paving, also known as slabbing or flagging, is available to choose from, including pinks and yellows for a warm feel provided by Cotswold stone, or greyer stone such as York stone. Surfaces of paving slabs also vary greatly, with riven faces providing grip and texture whilst natural stone can contain crystals to catch the light. Many sizes and shapes of paving are also on offer and some paving slabs are more suited to particular uses, such as patio packs for terraces and seating areas and stepping stones for along pathways. Laying paving gives spaces that require little maintenance and can be used as seating areas, for barbecuing and spending time with friends, and can be decorated with pots containing plants.

Although plants and gardens go hand in hand so it can seem obvious to point out that plants can make attractive features, they are sometimes overlooked. Across the UK, many different garden centres exist stocking wide ranges of plants, such as shrubs and annuals, tropical plants to climbers and fruit bushes. Using a mixture of colours, heights and textures, from groundcover to different coloured foliage and flowers, creates a balanced garden design, and can be further added to using fence panels painted in contrasting colours to provide a backdrop.

Whatever you decide are the best features for your outdoor area, a reliable local gardener can design and create the garden of your dreams.
