Book Editing and Proofreading

Categories
Writing

In addition to the distinction between proofreading and editing, when editing a book for publication, there are three additional types of editing: book editing, copyediting, and technical editing. Depending on the nature and condition of your book when you submit it to the editor, any or all of these types of editing may be beneficial.

Book editing takes a broad view by considering larger-scale changes to the book. These changes can take the form of rewriting entire paragraphs to better convey ideas, as well as eliminating redundant information that unnecessarily reoccurs in different places throughout the book. By taking a broad approach during the book editing process, the book as a whole can be crafted to best express the key concepts of the author, while still maintaining the finer points of the author’s presentation.

Copyediting is the complimentary step to book editing, in that it takes a precise view of all the mechanical, grammatical, and typographical issues in the book. Copyediting is different from proofreading because the copyeditor is also particularly concerned with maintaining the consistency of the author’s original style of writing throughout the book. During copyediting, there are no major additions or deletions to the text.

Technical editing serves the needs of professionals in a field who must convey specialized information in a format that is particular to a given industry. Technical editors, in addition to being proficient copyeditors, are also skilled in crafting a book to meet the needs of a specific industry.

We offer all three of these types of book editing as part of our full range of writing and editing services. Our editing staff is highly skilled in a variety of writing styles and formats needed by specific industries, and are always willing to adapt to meet your needs. We also offer examples of specialized book editing, and can provide free samples of editing to a portion of your book to illustrate the value-added benefits of our services.
