My 2004 Million Dollar Quest Journal.
I've been online for just 30 days now and I've accomplished quite a lot by many people’s standards, but me being me, I only see the things I didn't get accomplished. I didn't set out a major outline for myself because I didn't know what to expect. And after analyzing it all, I think I did pretty well since starting on November 24, 2003.
First, some history:
In November I joined a group that issued a challenge to every member to make $1 million between January 1, 2004 and midnight December 31, 2004. I took that challenge because in October I had just renewed two top-level domains I've owned for several years, in the hope of developing them myself someday:
· NowOnTheNet.com, which I have owned since 1998 and never done anything with;
· RentMoviesOnTheNet.com, which I have owned since 2000 and barely did a six-month trial with in 2000 (it was called RentVideosOnTheNet.com back then and I lost steam after the second month).
I had also registered a new domain name, ComputerRepairCentral.com, which is to be the international online version of what I do for a living now. I own a small computer repair company in sunny Jamaica, West Indies, called Computer Repair Center. I think it is a good model to replicate internationally, and after doing it myself for a year I think it's ready to go to at least North America -- where I lived for 15 years before coming back home to Jamaica 2 years ago. So I have a pretty good overview on the market over there.
I must also mention here that I'm starting with only these three domains, for which I paid USD$25.85, and a really good FREE host for all my sites. I must also mention that I do website design (since 1996) but have no graphic or major programming skills, just pure HTML.
My Aim for the First Month:
I wanted to simply get a website up for each of my three top-level domains, with at least three features working on each. I also wanted to submit them to all the major search engines to get a good start on the six to twelve weeks it can take to be listed in search engines.
No sooner had I launched that project than I realized a need for a fourth website, for the purpose of recruiting and informing the resellers I needed for the three main sites.
As soon as I did that, I realized I could incorporate a dream I had had since 1999, and that was to document my first year online so that others could learn from it while I'm doing it; so I then came up with fifth web site "theQuest", which is my daily Journal of the steps I take and the progress I make every day. When it's all done I hope to make it into a book.
After theQuest, I realized I needed major traffic, and searched around for some. The closest I came was "WorldWidePromoter" and "TrafficSwarm", and I found many aspects of the latter lacking, so I came up with my sixth web site, which I think is the ultimate traffic generator -- "MyStartPage" about a week ago.
What I Have Done So Far:
1. I have carried three web sites to about 90% of where I can carry them without help; I think I'm ready for that help now to take them to the next level.
a. With "theQuest", I brought it up to a full site with FAQ, About Us, etc., from conception. I've submitted it to all the major search engines and should be getting some results soon.
b. I conceived and brought "MyStartPage" to a similar level in less than a week -- so I'm learning pretty fast.
c. "EarnMoney" has its forms up and it too has been submitted to search engines; I just need the FAQ and Contact Us sections up and I'll be done with it also -- (that's about 2 hours work).
d. I have shells up for "NowOnTheNet.com" and "RentMoviesOnTheNet.com," though I haven't submitted them to search engines yet or made any of their features work. I think that since these are the main sites, I should wait until January 1st 2004 before I do any major action on them, in order to be fair to the one-year million-dollar challenge that I've taken on.
e. "ComputerRepairCentral.com" just needs some tweaking once I’ve had it turned on. (I've had a site up pertaining to Jamaica since about June 2003, but took it down in August 2003 because of some technical difficulty; I can have it up as soon as I ask the hosting company to do so. I'll ask them to put it up on January 2, 2004, and then it'll need a good two weeks’ work to bring it up to the international standard I desire.)
2. I've found about five safe lists, link trade sites and e-zine directories. I've gotten the e-mails of about 50 e-zines with which I'd like to form synergies of some kind, but have done nothing with any of them. This is where I feel I could have done more.
3. I've started to put in place a massive marketing machine, as I downloaded three great FREE trial programs that will help me to both optimize and automate most of my marketing efforts.
What I Didn’t Do:
1. As I mentioned above, I haven't submitted my three main websites to search engines or made any features on them work as yet, mainly because the one-year challenge doesn't really start until January.
2. I didn't send out more than three letters to request link trades and synergies because I felt something was missing. I think the three programs I downloaded last night were what was missing -- an e-zine assistant, an SEO (Search Engine Optimizer), and a Link Trade Manager. Now I can proceed with a lot more confidence and direction.
3. I haven't used up any of my surf for traffic or pop up trade credits yet, as I'm waiting until I earn up to 1,000 credits for "MyStartPage" to get it off to a decent start.
I don't know, should I or should I not try to work in partnership with a more established company as far as MyStartPage goes... It would be able to do more, reach more people faster, etc. I think I should try to form a synergy with a person or organization that can either do or afford the programming and reach that it deserves -- I pretty much have carried it to about 90% of where I can carry it without it being a struggle for the other 10%. I'll ponder this a little more, but right now I'm leaning more toward forming synergies. Maybe I'll simply request 10% of revenues it generates and placement of one changeable ad in the system for 1,000,000 clicks each month, for life. I can definitely live with that.
What I Would Like To Do Next:
Well, I would like to work with a graphic designer and a PHP programmer to really bring my sites to life. I do a lot of surfing and I make notes of sites and features I like so far, so that when I find such people, I will be able to move fast.
I would like to find one or several Chief Operations Managers for all my sites, to handle the day-to-day operations while I focus on what I like, which is the creative end.
I would also like to automate everything as much as possible. The host that I have all my sites with has great features that will allow a lot of the automation I have in mind, but I'm on the lookout for services I like that I could also use.
In Conclusion:
Apart from that, I think I pretty much did all I could in 30 days. I only hope the next 30 days are as fruitful. These past 30 days I slept for just three to six hours each night and only took a nap during the day about three times. I have experienced this feeling before. Back in 1996 when I went without sleep for three days in order to complete my first website -- the desire just keeps you motivated. I love this feeling, but I know it won't last forever so I just try to ride the wave and not criticize too much -- but wow, what a month I've had!
